Padres Lose Series in Bronx

For the first time since the 2008 season, the Padres faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium this week. This marked San Diego’s first ever visit to the new Yankee Stadium.

The series began on Memorial Day as the Padres lost 5-2.

San Diego opened the scoring with two runs in the 2nd on RBI double’s by Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges but New York responded with three runs in the third.

The Yankees added two more in the bottom of the 8th on a Gary Sanchez home run and a RBI single by former Padre Cameron Maybin.

On Wednesday the Padres came out firing by scoring four runs in the top of the 1st off Masahiro Tanaka. Manny Machado opened up the game with an RBI single and Eric Hosmer crushed a three run homer over Monument Park in center field.

Gary Sanchez homered for the second straight day to cut the lead to 4-1 in the 4th but the Padres used a little small ball get the run right back in the 6th.

Things got a bit scary in the late innings as the Yankees scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th and got the tying run on to lead off the inning in the 9th but Kirby Yates shut the door for his league leading 21st save as the Padres won the game 5-4.

In the rubber match of the series, San Diego starter Chris Paddack was hit hard, surrendering back to back home runs to open up the game and another home run in the 2nd. While Paddack struggled, so did the Padres offense as they were held to just four hits and no runs in a 7-0 loss.

San Diego’s record now stands at 29-27, 7.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 1 game behind Atlanta for the NL Wild Card.

The Padres had an off day on Thursday before welcoming in the Miami Marlins for a three game series on Friday. Joey Lucchesi (3-3, 4.25 ERA) is projected to start on Friday night with Saturday’s starter yet to be named.
