On Monday, September 24th, a group of San Diego’s young leaders gathered at Thorn St Brewery’s Barrio Logan location to support candidate Sean Elo’s race for the San Diego Community College Board.

Elo’s campaign centers on three central pillars:

Free College for All
More Full-Time Professors & Counselors
Meeting Basic Needs for Students & Professors

While these are fundamentally straightforward premises, the challenges in achieving each of these objectives are many and have inspired support for Sean’s cause from a wide range of constituents. None more supportive than the youthful generation of up and coming leaders who see themselves in Sean.

“Last night was about young leaders,” explained Elo. “I am grateful to have received support from folks from many generations. However, for the most part, it’s been people from our generation who’ve been willing to contribute their time, effort, and money to supporting what we’re trying to do. They’ve given more even though they have less and they’ve been so consistent in standing with me. So, that’s who I invited. And, as has been the case since our launch, that’s who showed up.”

The night itself followed a similar structure to many campaign fundraising events. Check in, give some money, share contact info with staffers, mingle for a bit, listen to the host’s introduction, listen to the candidate’s message, wind down with one more wave of donations and then close out with a bit more mingling.

However the nature of the messages shared by Sean’s staff in his introduction, Sean’s message itself and the closing by event host Sara Jacobs resonated with the gathered audience. Central to Elo’s appeal to the masses is his depth of empathy for each and every individual he comes across. He listens deeply to and cares completely about the people in his life.

That type of attitude inspires hope in today’s world where elected officials far too often seem to be from different planets than their constituents.

In addition to having the support of the people, Sean Elo has been endorsed by the San Diego County Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, San Diego Democratic Woman’s Club, Chicano Democratic Association, San Diego Democrats for Equality, and many more organizations in his race.
