Padres Take Series in Miami
The Padres picked up their 4th consecutive series victory this past weekend taking two out of three from the Marlins in Miami. The team is 7-3 in its last 10 and still sits only 5.5 back from the NL West leading Diamondbacks.
The series did not get off to a good start for the Friars as they were shutout on Friday night 4-0. They were held to just six hits and only had two baserunners over the final 3 ⅔ innings. Miami scored two in the 4th on a sac fly and an RBI single to take a 2-0 and added single runs in the 5th and 6th to take the first game of the series.
San Diego bounced back in game two of the series with thrilling 5-4 win. The Padres jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Cory Spangenberg RBI single, a passed ball, and a Freddy Galvis double. Miami got one back in the bottom of the third but Freddy Galvis homered in the top of the 4th to put the Padres back up by three.
The Marlins rallied to tie the game with three in the 6th inning but Travis Jankowski won the game for the Friars with a base loaded, two out single in the top of the 8th to give the Padres a 5-4 lead. Kirby Yates got his second save of the season in the win.
On Sunday, Clayton Richard flirted with history as he no-hit the Marlins for the first 6 ⅔ innings before a Miguel Rojas single. Richard pitched 7 brilliant innings, allowing one run on just two hits while Eric Hosmer hit his 8th home run of the season in the Padres 3-1 win. Brand Hand picked up his 19th save of the season
The Padres are now 31-36 and will head to St. Louis for a three game series vs the Cardinals. Jordan Lyles (2-2, 4.70 ERA) will get the start on Monday with Tuesday’s starter to be announced.
